The BBC is beginning to play trailers for the upcoming Doctor Who Easter special “Planet of the Dead”, one of David Tennant’s final outings as The Doctor.
Watch the first Planet of the Dead trailer below:
Planet of the Dead features David Tennant as the tenth Doctor, and Michelle Ryan (Bionic Woman) as companion-for-the-special Christina de Souza. The story involves the Doctor and Christina being transported (while riding a London bus) to an alien world, where they encounter the fly-like Tritovore.
The Daily Express is reporting that a BBC mole has told them that Tom Baker will be returning to the series after over twenty-eight years to appear alongside the 11th Doctor Matt Smith.
Tom Baker played the fourth Doctor, from 1974-1981, and is widely considered to be the most popular and iconic of the classic series Doctors, only surpassed in worldwide popularity by David Tennant in recent years.
The BBC has not officially announced this, and even if it’s true are not likely to announce it anytime soon since Smith won’t be taking over the role until 2010. Read full Former Doctor Who Tom Baker To Return in 2010...(507 words, 4 images, estimated 2:02 mins reading time)
The Coventry Telegraph reports that a mysterious crater has appeared overnight outside of the Coventry Transport Museum, just a day before the opening of a new Doctor Who exhibition on Friday.
Reportedly, strange lights and smoke were seen to be emanating from the crater, and police have cordoned off the area while experts are being brought in to examine the scene.
Considering the timing, I can only assume the crater was caused by the Autons following their traditional pattern of spearheading their invasions with false meteors containing the Nestene Consciousness.
The Telegraph is reporting that the current TARDIS interior will be given “a complete overhaul” before the end of David Tennant’s run, just in time for new Doctor Matt Smith to take over.
The details are a little sparse at this point, but the redesign was the idea of new producer Stephen Moffat, and has been described as “the most high-tech, intricate TARDIS ever.”
Personally, I really like the current interior, but wouldn’t mind seeing something a *little* closer to the traditional roundels and columns, but I guess I’ll have to wait and see before I pass judgement. It seems that an Ood was spotted during filming of what is presumed to be the second of the 2009 Doctor Who specials, starring David Tennant as the Doctor and guest starring Lindsay Duncan as his companion.
Filming is currently going in Newport, Wales; earlier in the week filming took place in a quarry, an old standby of the classic series.
During the filming at the quarry, David Tennant was seen wearing an orange spacesuit much like the one he wore in the series 2 two-parter The Impossible Planet/The Satan Pit, which introduced the characters of the Ood. One of my personal favorite Tom Baker stories, Image of the Fendahl, is coming to DVD in the UK this April.
Co-starring Louise Jameson as Leela, this story was classic Doctor Who’s most direct stab at outright horror, featuring the Fendahl, an ancient monster from Timelord myth which ate life itself.
One of the things that made this story so scary for me as a child was that it was one of the few times where we actually see the Doctor truly afraid, as encountering the Fendahl plays on his childhood fears from the stories he heard of them when he was young. Sixth Doctor Colin Baker made a joke in his column for This Is Local London about how young new Doctor Matt Smith is, saying:
“As if David Tennant hadn’t already proved the visibly beneficial power of time travel on the genes, the imminent new one, Matt Smith, we are told, is so young that he is likely to be asked for ID if he tries to purchase an intergalactic gargle blaster in licensed premises either side of the Atlantic.” Read full Colin Baker Jokes New Doctor Would Get Carded...(447 words, 2 images, estimated 1:47 mins reading time)
This Easter the Doctor Who special “Planet of the Dead” will introduce a new monster the BBC hopes to be as iconic as the Daleks. The Tritovore are described as “half-man half-fly” creatures according to the Daily Mirror.
“They are disgusting and will last long in the memory,” and were designed in the hope of becoming as iconic Doctor Who monsters as the Daleks or the Cybermen.
The Doctor will face the Tritovore alongside new companion Lady Christina de Souza, who is played by Michelle Ryan of “Bionic Woman” and “Eastenders”. It has been rumored that Ryan’s character will not just appear in the special, but may become the ongoing companion in future specials or series five in 2010. John Scott Martin, who appeared in over 70 episodes of Doctor Who, has died at the age of 82.
Though they may not recognize his name, fans of the classic series of Doctor Who have seen his work again and again, as he played Daleks and many other aliens and monsters over the years, including a the Zarbi (The Web Planet), the Mechanoids (The Chase), a Mutt (The Mutants), the Nucleus of the Swarm (The Invisible Enemy) and more.
While Martin mainly played monsters in the classic series, he also occasionaly played human characters including a miner named Hughes (The Green Death), although he was not always credited. Read full Dalek Operator John Scott Martin Has Died...(395 words, 2 images, estimated 1:35 mins reading time)
